In contrast with the usual feminist reading, the camera’s gaze captures in young and healthy elders, traditionally maternal attention and protection. The music is infrequent and never banal, the images rich and varied: the camera presents us with a billy goat, Disney-esque lambs, the soft, swollen hands kneading fresh cheese, the faces of the protagonists against the woods, gorges and fog-filled valleys.
