From the Santa Cecilia Conservatory to MAXXI, the museum piazza turns to jazz
A new project that features young musicians, all jazz undergraduates from the Santa Cecilia Conservatory and already established leaders of their own bands, led on this occasion by Paolo Damiani, composer, cellist and director of the Rome conservatory’s jazz department.
The compositions by Paolo Damiani are characterised by an original melodic vein rooted in the ethnic music of southern Italy and Italian opera. While the pieces are firmly structured, the counterpoint tends to generate open, flexible sound spaces in which breathing and sudden gesture dance freely and with joy. The cantabile nature of the compositions never foregoes research, understood above all as a curious ear, invention, wonder, ironic wandering, pleasure and enjoyment.
