more information

In the exhibition galleries, there is but one language: laughter.

The performers laugh to convey joy, euphoria and emotion, but also fear, anger and suffering. They laugh whilst running, hugging one another and playing like teenagers, compelled by a mysterious force to give their laughter a rhythm, a sound and a form.

The title is a tribute to Augusto: the white clown, the fool, the clumsy, drunken idiot with the red nose, who is always hurting himself and laughs at everything. But ‘Augusto’ also means imperial, regal; it is the name of Rome’s first emperor, creating two faces of the same mask.

Just as in the circus, where a clown’s fall is met with a mock slap, in AUGUSTO we laugh at violence too. We laugh as children laugh, until we realise that, this time, we’ve really hurt ourselves.
