‘The body plays. Play connects. Coming together creates community. And community builds the city.’

Tatiana Bilbao, one of the most influential and original figures in contemporary architecture, is the featured artist in NATURE 09, the ninth edition of the programme that invites an architect to design a site-specific installation representing a sort of ‘three-dimensional self-portrait’.

With Campo aperto, the Mexican architect transforms the Gian Ferrari Hall into a landscape to explore and inhabit, making the visitor an active participant. The starting point is the game of pelota, one of the most significant practices of Mesoamerican civilisations. More than a recreational activity, the ball game was a collective ritual deeply linked to religion, social organisation, life, and fertility.

The court served as a meeting place, a symbolic space where the individual and the community, the human world and the supernatural, and life and death came into relation. Drawing inspiration from this tradition, Tatiana Bilbao imagines an architecture that does not merely host an activity but generates possibilities for connection.
