The diary of spiritual growth, the film by Pawel Pawlikowski(Denmark/ Poland/ Fance/ Great Britain, 2013, 82’) won the Best Foreign Film Oscar in 2015: the composition of the framing has the brilliance of the great masters of black and white.
Before taking her vows as a nun, Anna learns from her aunt, her only surviving relative, of her Jewish heritage: together they set out for the old family home. Now that Anna has seen something of the world she can decide whether the convent life is for her.
The screening will be preceded by the short film La Jetée by Chris Marker (France, 1962, 28’). The best known film composed entirely of photographs documents a small group of human beings who live underground following a nuclear catastrophe: one of them goes back in time to prevent the incident, although the labyrinth of his memories conceals a terrible secret. Terry Gilliam based his robust science fiction feature 12 Monkeys on La Jetée, but few films radiate the same enigmatic density in less than half an hour.
