An extraordinary and ruthless fable that pulls no punches

During their lifetimes, the philosopher Kierkegaard and the writer Andersen exchanged few words and few compliments. While Andersen was increasingly famous and highly praised as an author of fables in Denmark and elsewhere, Kierkegaard was secretly working on his own style of fable: severe, inexorable, investigating, even for children, the concept of anxiety. L’avventura del giglio selvatico is one of these extraordinary, anomalous fables contrasting with the kings and princesses of the tradition, with Andersen’s ugly duckling and little mermaid. Kierkegaard, however, never actually published a book of fables; Gianni Garrera has traced among Kierkegaard’s writings this hidden fable, now published by Quodlibet and illustrated by Matteo Fato with stark, spare drawings.
