Two films recount and explore the life and works of the Finnish masters of modern architecture and design.
Dedicated to a single and extraordinary work by Aalto – the only one realised in Italy by the Finnish architect – Roberto Ronchi and Mara Corradi’s documentary, Non abbiamo sete di scenografie – La lunga storia della chiesa di Alvar Aalto a Riola goes in search of the precious and complex project which took no less than thirteen years to build, until its opening in 1978 after the architect’s death, tracing in parallel the social and economic events that characterised the province of Bologna between the 1960s and 1970s.
Virpi Suutari’s AALTO, on the other hand, takes us on an enchanting journey through Alvar and Aino Aalto’s most iconic creative processes and projects between Finland, Russia and Paris, up to the 1950s, which opened a new phase in Alvar’s work, marked by the loss of his first wife and his subsequent marriage to Elissa. Through never-before-seen archive material and the testimony of friends and scholars, the film retraces the most significant moments of Aalto’s life and extraordinary design concerning the history of modernism.
