18 original essays on the pioneering work of those who used the camera to recount personal and collective upheavals and to bear witness to their times.

The volume Italian Female Filmmakers in the Sixties and Seventies. Lives, histories, and identities, edited by Carla Subrizi, Paola Ugolini and Maria Alicata, constitutes one of the most significant and in-depth contributions to two of the decades in which artists, directors and independent filmmakers constructed a new language and, with it, different ways of observing and representing the world and history, the social and political context, and their own lives.
