Should the press serve the government or those who are governed? This question, at the heart of journalistic ethics, is as relevant today as it was in the early 1970s, when the publication of secret reports on Vietnam (the famous Pentagon Papers) sparked a fierce conflict between the Nixon administration and America’s two leading newspapers: The New York Times and The Washington Post. Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, in the roles of editor-in-chief and publisher, face off against each other at the centre of an epoch-defining political and legal storm. Spielberg portrays them as heroes of composed and indomitable courage, but also with the admiration of someone who cannot help but love them for their style of elegant irony. “Watching Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg together is like witnessing a symphony” (Brent Knight).

The film will be preceded by a conversation between Giorgio Zanchini and Mario Sesti and the screening of a video essay titled È la stampa bellezza! – I.
