“The need to discover new things and to react, whether with hate or with love, applause or protest, praise or contempt… I believe this is the essential component of my idea.”
– Sharif Sehnaoui
THE EDUCATONAL PROPOSAL
On the occasion of the exhibition Home Beirut. Sounding the Neighbors, MAXXI is presenting an educational workshop with the Lebanese artist Sharif Sehnaoui.
The workshop will permit experimentation with music, investigating together with the artist the origins and the realities of a new musical scene underlying which is the “Irtijal” improvisation that accompanies the musicians in an unpredictable journey within the world of sound.
Examining the origins and influences of each musician, the workshop will be an opportunity for exchange and personal enrichment, thanks not only to the experience of the artist, but above all to his idea of making music together, of collaborating and drawing inspiration from the experiences of others.
At the end of the course, there will be a performance open to the public, an ensemble in which the participant will be able to perform alongside Sharif.
The workshop will be held in English.
Sharif Sehnaoui is a freely improvisational guitarist. He plays both electric and acoustic guitars, with (or without) the use of extension and preparation techniques and he focuses on the expansion of the intrinsic properties of the instruments, without recourse to electronic effects or devices. In his country he has contributed to the birth of an unprecedented experimental music scene and still today represents an important point of reference on the Lebanese cultural, political and social scene.
