A book that reveals how life flows inside the Solares, the multi-family housing spaces of the Caribbean island.
After the Cuban Revolution of 1955, the government implemented a housing redistribution system that transformed large single family houses and apartment buildings into social housing units shared by several families, known as Solares, multi-family living spaces that mirror the complexity of the contemporary Cuban society.
With Vivir Con – edited by Silvana Editoriale – photographer Carolina Sandretto talks about the topic of family, which has always played a major role in her life. In four years of travelling and working with a 1950s camera, she has visited these small spaces that many Cubans are forced to share with their large families, investigating different family realities and revealing the life that flows within the Solares.
