Sundance Short Film Jury Award winner, Garrett Bradley explores socio-economic injustice, human conflict, historical reflection.

In occasion of the Videoart Week at MAXXI and in collaboration with the American Academy in Rome, Garrett Bradley presents her new film America, a cinematic omnibus rooted in New Orleans with the aim to reveal and re-interpret a lost history in African American Cinema.

In response to the MoMA’s recent discovery of the Bert Williams film, Lime Kiln Club Field Day as well as the 2013 survey conducted by the Library of Congress, stating that 70% of the American silent feature films made between 1912 and 1929 have gone missing, Bradley aims to counteract a cultural amnesia through the creation of original works. America works off the assumption that the stated 70% included a breadth of work made by and for African American artists and filmmakers.

The artist is the winner of the 2019–2020 Rome Prizes at the American Academy in the category for visual art.
