A conference dedicated to one of the most controversial Italian architects, the designer of true masterpieces
The work of Giovanni Michelucci (1891-1990) is intimately linked with the autostrada church of St John the Baptist, which still today, over half a century on from its inauguration, is criticised for its presumed excesses of modernism. A similar destiny, of misunderstandings and overturning of meanings awaited the first undisputed masterpiece by the Pistoia-born architect: Santa Maria Novella station in Florence. The conference will examine the most controversial aspects of these masterpieces of Italian architecture and contextualise them with respect to the urban sensibility expressed by the architect in less divisive but by no means less interesting and exemplary works.
Claudia Conforti is a lecturer in the History of Architecture in the Department of Business Engineering of the Roma “Tor Vergata” University. She is an honorary academic of the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca and an honorary academic of the Perugia Fine Arts Academy; she is also a member of the editorial boards of the magazines “Casabella”, “Rassegna di Architettura e Urbanistica”, “ArtItalies” (Paris), “Abaton” (Madrid) and “Città e Storia”.
This event is part of the series of lectures History of Italian Architecture, realised in collaboration with Cersaie, which examines Italian architecture through the figures of Scarpa, Moretti, Michelucci, Terragni and Albini.
