Photography is a tool for pursuing and revealing the truth. On display six images from the series dedicated to Genoa’s transvestite community.
The displayed photographs witness Carmi’s long work dedicated to Genoa’s transvestite community. This relationship began with the first shots on New Year’s Eve 1965 in the city’s Jewish ghetto and continued until 1971. The photos were published in 1970 in a volume that, due to its content and title considered scabrous for the morals of the time, was rejected by many bookshops, thus becoming a publishing case. A first and very rare edition of the book, a piece of Italian photography’s history, is preserved in the Incontri Internazionali d’Arte Fund at MAXXI.
Lisetta Carmi (Genoa, 1924 – Cisternino, Brindisi, 2022) is one of the protagonists of post-World War II reportage photography. Born into a family of Jewish origins and forced into exile, Carmi came to photography after a long experience as a concert pianist. From the early 1960s, she devoted herself to photography for political commitment and personal inner research.
The photographs, exhibited on the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, preview the exhibition FUORI TUTTO. Esporre i depositi, at MAXXI from 28 June 2023.
