A discussion on the role of technology in structural engineering and the solutions it offers in creating complex projects that challenge the laws of nature.
According to architectural historian and urbanist Nina Rappaport – who was also on the curatorial committee for the exhibition Technoscape. The architecture of engineers – functional form and maximising structural performance is a creative endeavour in its own right. The engineer’s role understood as the designer of structural design based on form determines what she calls ‘deep decoration’.
The new role of the engineer/designer, combined with experimentation in sustainable and renewable materials, as well as technological advances, is the focus of Rappaport’s talk with William Baker, a structural engineer and partner in the historic architectural, urban planning and engineeringengineering firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). Baker is responsible for the structural design of some of the world’s most famous and tallest buildings, including the Burj Khalifa (828 m, the world’s tallest), Zifeng Tower, 401 N Wabash, Pearl River Tower, The Franklin – North Tower, and the Cayan Tower.
