A seminar exploring the works and themes of a studio that has won multiple prizes around the world
The latest appointment with #LightOn, curated by iGuzzini and MAXXI, features the architect Louisa Hutton from the Sauerbruch Hutton studio.
Matthias Sauerbruch and Louisa Hutton founded their studio in 1989. Both former students at the Architectural Association, Sauerbruch from Germany had experience in OMA’s London studio, while Hutton, born in great Britain, had worked with Alison and Peter Smithson. The studio was initially located in London, where the two built their first projects, such as the L House. After a few years they moved to Berlin where in 1999 they completed construction of the GSW headquarters, the building that placed them centre stage on the international scene and highlighted the essential points of their working methods: the intelligent and innovative use of colour, the freedom of forms, their hostility to passive attitudes to the Berlin block and urban forms in general. Following the GSW, Sauerbruch Hutton confirmed the quality of their work with numerous important buildings, from the Environmental Agency in Dessau (2005) to the Brandhorst Museum in Munich (2008) and the celebrated Oval Offices in Cologne (2010). Multiple prize winners and exhibited throughout the world and also engaged in teaching in Europe and North America, in 2010 Sauerbruch Hutton won the competition for the M9 museum in Mestre which is currently under construction.
