Gian Ferrari Hall
Photography, video, drawing and installations demonstrating the fluidity of the confine e between reality and fiction and how man continues, despite everything to make the same mistakes
MAXXI, together with Deutsche Bank, presents the first exhibition in Italy devoted to Basim Magdy: over 30 works, produced between 2006 and 2016, by the Egyptian artist, winner of Deutsche Bank’s “Artist of the Year” prize in 2016.
From the installation The Future of Your Head (2008) to the imposing photographic work An Apology of a Love Story that Crashed into a Whale, from the trilogy of films produced in 2014 (The Everyday Ritual of Solitude Hatching Monkeys – The Many Colors of the Sky Radiate Forgetfulness – The Dent) to the paintings in psychedelic colours Miniature Existence (2009), or A Recollection of Past Errors Manifested as a Crustacean (2013), the works of Basim Magdy emanate a strange tragicomic glee: what makes them so otherworldly is the use of hypnotic music, acid colours and the antiquated flavour of the texts with which the artist creates narrations that leave endings open.
