MAXXI turns 15!celebrate the Museum's birthday with us
Saturday 6 October 2012
Free admittance to the museum with extended opening through to 2.00 A.M.
Two major events for an art and architecture marathon lasting an entire day.
Celebrate with us on the 6th of October: on the occasion of the VIII Day of the Contemporary and Museum Night 2012, MAXXI will be open free to the public from 11 in the morning to 2 at night, with last admissions at 1.00 A.M.
This year too MAXXI will be participating in what is the eighth edition of the Day of the Contemporary, the broad-based event dedicated to contemporary art and its public promoted by AMACI, the Association of Italian Contemporary Art Museums. Visitors will enjoy free admission to MAXXI throughout the day.
This year AMACI has chosen Francesco Vezzoli to create the event identity for the latest edition of the Day of the Contemporary. The artist has chosen as the keynote image Self-portrait as Antinous Loving Emperor Hadrian, which brings together the portraits of the Emperor Hadrian – a sculpture from the 2nd Century A.D. – and the young Antinous – a self-portrait in white Carrara marble of the artist himself.
Hadrian and Antinous. Face to face, almost cheek to cheek thanks to the gesture of an artist of today approaching the work of an artist of the past, projecting it into the future with new meaning.
The work is therefore a hymn to memory, a play of mirrors and references between the artist’s gaze, that of his figures and our own, all staged with the simple classicism of a gesture that revives the power of the ancient metaphor, thrusting it into the future.
In previous editions, the projects were entrusted to Michelangelo Pistoletto in 2006, Maurizio Cattelan in 2007, Paola Pivi in 2008, Luigi Ontani in 2009, Stefano Arienti in 2010 and Giulio Paolini in 2011.
Following the postponement of the event scheduled for the 19th of May as a sign of respect after the Brindisi bombing, Museum Night 2012 will now take place on the 6th of October.
On this exceptional occasion MAXXI will be open to the public until 2.00 (last admissions an hour ahead of closing time).
