A documentary double-header at MAXXI with Il Capo (2010, duration 15’) and Piattaforma Luna (2011, duration 25’) by the visual artist, director and video art lecturer Yuri Ancarani. Conceived and produced as artist’s documentaries, the two films compose the first two chapters of a trilogy in which the trait d’union is the theme of work.
Il Capo or “The Chief” is a documentary set in the Carrara marble quarries. The protagonist is the quarry chief who, using a language composed solely of gestures and signs, controls, coordinates and conducts quarry men and machinery. Directing his perilous and sublime orchestra while looking out over the Apuane cliffs and peaks, the Chief works amidst an absolute noise that paradoxically is represented in the film by silence.
Piattaforma Luna or “Platform Luna” instead features a group of six specialist deep-sea divers. In an off-shore operation conducted aboard the platform Luna, for weeks the lives of these workers alternate between the seabed at a depth of 100 metres and the hyperbaric chamber.
