In cooperation with Fondazione Adriano Olivetti
Promoting Olivetti’s concept of architectural culture as a means to study, analyse and enhance 20th-century Italian architecture
The MAXXI will host a new series of events to study urban transformation and the delicate relationship between historic and contemporary cities by symbolically juxtaposing the activities that the towns of Ivrea, Matera and Pozzuoli will carry out in the next years.
Three events to dwell upon Adriano Olivetti’s “Man’s cities”
The third event, which will see the participation of Paola Ascione and Franco Panzini, is devoted to the town of Pozzuoli. The local Olivetti factory is a rare example of harmony between industrial architecture and a landscape of great importance. The premises overlook “the most unique gulf in the world”, and are a testament to the broad economic and social development policies that Adriano Olivetti promoted in southern Italy in the 50s. Indeed, Olivetti managed to invest in the south even at a time of great internal migration. The project was drafted by Luigi Cosenza, who had already been entrusted with the Regional Plan for Campania, and saw the contribution of Nizzoli, who chose the colours, and Porcinai, who was in charge of the green areas aimed at helping the premises blend in with the landscape. The famous speech that Adriano Olivetti gave during the 1955 inauguration led the Pozzuoli intervention to be considered as one of the examples of Italian excellency.
Architect Paola Ascione teaches at the Federico II University of Naples, where she also heads the Laboratory for the Planning of Environmental Systems and the Executive Design course. She is a member of the scientific council of the Architecture and Interior Design master course. She carries out research activities for the Architectural Design and Technological and Environmental Planning department of the DiARC, and she is a member of the BAP Interdepartmental Centre (research for the Architectural and Environmental heritage and Urban Planning). She has published many scientific contributions devoted to the requalification of modern and contemporary architecture.
Architect and landscape historian Franco Panzini teaches at the Landscape and Garden Architecture master course of the IUAV University of Venice. He has published many books on the history of urban gardens and green areas, and he is a regional representative of the APGI (Parks and Gardens of Italy Association), a member of the steering committee of the Associazione Pietro Porcinai, and a member of the editing board of the «Studies in the History of Gardens & Designed Landscapes» magazine.
