Early in the 20th century in Australia a lighthouse keeper and his wife find a baby in a drifting boat. They adopt the child but discover that the mother may still be alive. In competition at the last Venice Film Festival, based on a best-selling novel and enhanced by spectacular lighting and actors will all the necessary romanticism, the film is “emotionally true, and that’s often the most important thing for a film of this nature” (James Berardinelli, Reel Film).
