31 May – 1 June 2014
Following the great success of the first edition presented in Cagliari in May 2013, the Across Asia Film Festival arrives at MAXXI for two days entirely dedicated to independent Philippine film and culture: a selection of the most recent films from the Philippine New Wave, a movement of filmmakers and artists that developed in the early 2000s in the Metro Manila area, internationally famous for the punk trends of its films and the continual research into an idiom of confines contaminated with diverse expressive forms.
traditional dance, rap and street dance by Philippine teenagers
Among the events are a masterclass on guerrilla production by the director Khavn de la Cruz, enfant terrible of Philippine cinema known as the Takashi Miike or the Lars Von Trier of the Philippines. The creator of self-produced low budget films thanks to the use of digital technologies, Khavn has succeeded in creating an independent and visionary factory. Also scheduled is a live set of Spirit Songs, presented by the musician Mike Cooper.
The festival will conclude with a special event: the screening of KALAKALA, a filmic journey with a touch of horror through the ruins of the Sendong typhoon. Presented at MoMA PS1 in New York in 2013, the film will be accompanied on the piano by its multi-talented director Khavn De La Cruz.
