A tribute to two figures of 20th-century and contemporary Italian music, in a dialogue that spans time, memory and modernity.
In Luigi Dallapiccola’s work, the relationship between poetry and music plays an important role throughout his entire oeuvre. The concert offers three examples: Due liriche di Anacreonte (Two Lyrics by Anacreon) for soprano, piccolo clarinet, viola and piano (1945), linked to Salvatore Quasimodo’s well-known and successful translation of the Greek lyric poets, Quattro liriche di Antonio Machado for voice and piano (1948), in which the composer sets four poems by the great Spanish poet to music, and the Goethe-Lieder for female voice and three clarinets (1953), a selection of poems by the famous German author.
In Aldo Clementi, the dimension of visuality and his encounter with Informal painting were decisive in determining his creative path. From the 1960s onwards, the composer found inspiration and convergence with the results of the Informal art movement, in particular with the optical-perceptual experiences of painters such as Achille Perilli, Piero Dorazio, Victor Vasarely and Optical Art. This is evidenced by the static textures and the sound continuum of the works in the programme: Reticolo: 4 for string quartet (1968); B.A.C.H. for piano (1970) and Concertino for flute, clarinet, piano, 2 violins, viola and cello (1999).
