A series of seminars devoted to the history of Italian photography from the Seventies to the present
On the occasion of the exhibition Extraordinary visions L’Italia ci guarda international lecturers, critics and researchers will be meeting the public to explore the fundamental episodes in the history of photography and to introduce the great masters who have borne testimony to and documented the history of Italy.
In the first seminar Claudio Marra, professor in the History of Photograph at the University of Bologna, reflects on the identity of photography in its relations with the visual arts. We usually think of this relationship as having had and continuing to have an obligatory direction, with photography committed to chasing, catching up with and aligning itself with the high level of art. This conventional wisdom had sense in the 19th century when art provided no alternatives to the painting model; during the course of the 20th century things radically changed with the proposal of models based on characteristics such as auteur theory, the re-evaluation of technique and the recovery of the real. Today these concepts are a model for the various identities taken on by the visual arts of which photography is a part.
