MAXXI Piazza – free access
PLEASE NOTE: for this occasion, on Saturday 25 March the museum will close at 8:30 PM with the last admittance at 7:30 PM. The following day, Sunday 26 March, the opening times will instead be extended through to 10:00 PM with the last admittance at 9:00 PM.
Earth Hour, the global WWF event dedicated to climate change, arrives at MAXXI this year. A full day of activities in the museum piazza culminating in the symbolic switch off of the MAXXI lights at 8.30 PM.
The WWF is in fact reprising its global event, inviting people, businesses and institutions to symbolically switch off from 8:30 PM in each country the lights in homes, offices and landmarks, celebrating planetary darkness.
Waiting for Earth Hour, the full day of activities for children and families is being hosted in the MAXXI Piazza from 11:00 AM to 6:30 PM: the WWF will be organizing games, experiments and open-air lessons on global warming and face painting for kids. Moreover, 300 mini papier mache pandas will be invading the area, accompanied by polar bear images and masks, the species symbolising the effects of climate change.
The evening will also feature dance demonstrations with a pop dance flash mob at 6:30 PM, activated via the social media by a number of Rome dance schools. Following the switch-off ceremony at 8:30 PM, which will take place simultaneously in hundreds of Italian and European cities, we’ll keep on dancing… The Tangare association has organized through to 11.00 PM a special group demonstration by all the teachers from the various participating Rome tango schools, in collaboration with the dancer Mariano Navone. This will be followed by a free milonga, open to all. The climate tango will take place simultaneously in other Italian cities.
