Fotografia a colori.

A video installation that depicts myth as an active field of forces where exile, violence, narrative, and landscape continue to produce images, phantoms, and forms of awareness in the present.

Miasma emerged from Lemnos, an artistic research project launched in 2022 and dedicated to the relationships between Greek myth, historical memory and the contemporary landscape, developed through fieldwork conducted mainly in Greece. Following an initial staged instalment centred on the myth of Philoctetes, the project returns to the real island which, in the 20th century, definitively shattered the myth: Makronisos, a site of detention and political re-education during the Greek Civil War.

Through images, field recordings, soundscapes and textual inserts, the work constructs a fragile geography in which history continues to settle into the present, oscillating between memory and oblivion. Whilst in the myth of Philoctetes the hero’s solitude stems from an infected wound (a body excluded and abandoned because it was contaminated, marked by what the Greek world called ‘miasma’), in the twentieth century that term re-emerges in a violent political twist: the Greek right and the monarchy use it to describe the alleged ideological ‘infection’ of communism.
