A critical examination of how objects, spaces and technologies have historically excluded women’s bodies and needs.

The vast majority of 20th-century industrial design products have historically been based on the so-called ‘average man’ standard: a male individual, able-bodied, and abstracted from his context. If, over the last hundred years, we have seen car seats and sports equipment change, offices and kitchens transform, and technologies evolve to meet needs or improve the user experience, can the same be said for what has been conceived, designed and produced with women’s bodies in mind?

The very history of design, even when not written by men, is shaped by male logic: viewing design from a feminist perspective therefore helps us not only to denounce exclusion, but to imagine a world in which women design tools capable of safeguarding their own reproductive health, pleasure and safety, starting from a reclaimed understanding of their own bodies.
