What happens when a work of art is restored? And what do the materials, techniques and the changes that time leaves on the surfaces tell us?

With IN RESTAURO, the doors are opened to a process normally hidden from the public, transforming restoration into a visitor experience. Temporary workshops spring to life within the Museum’s spaces, where visitors can observe the restorers’ work up close: a journey through scientific research, diagnostic investigations, and the care of cultural heritage.

For the fourth instalment of the project, the workshop is set up in the Museum’s corner, in the square. The focus is on La Stanza dei Verticali (1995–2000) by Remo Salvadori, one of the most significant figures in Italian art, who recently passed away. Students from the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro will be working on the piece, supported by their tutors: a rare opportunity to follow every stage of the restoration process first-hand.

La Stanza dei Verticali is a large-scale installation comprising eleven elements in copper and steel (square plates, curved sheets, circles of drawn wire), all forged and crafted by hand. The work visualises Pythagoras’ theorem and, in Salvadori’s own words, brings the two metals into contact ‘in an embrace’: the union between the circle, the masculine element, and the copper plate, the feminine element.
