An authentic, physical and metaphysical immersion in Southern Italy and its magical, ethical and aesthetic features.

There are 44 photographs selected by curator Francesco Cascino for this exhibition, images of people in their daily lives, in ancestral rituals, at festivals, during events, and while working in the fields, transporting us to hidden cultures through the investigative and poetic languages of art and Neo-realism.

An active reflection on memory and the capacity of the invisible of all times, including our own, to build value, produce sustainable wealth and deliver the world intact to us. A gaze and a vision, those of Notarangelo, bring millennia of customs and culture to the surface. The exhibition at MAXXI takes the visitor inside that millenary reality that Domenico Notarangelo has not stopped in photographs but has transformed into a continuous evolutionary narrative, taking us inside things.

Accompanying the exhibition is a medium-length film by director Francesco Dongiovanni on one of the most famous apotropaic rites in Southern Italy, Il Maggio di Accettura, made by digitising Super8 footage shot by Notarangelo himself in the early 1970s.
