Although the legal nature of ‘human rights’ requires laws and institutions to be passed so that individuals can exercise them, their enforcement leaves something to be desired everywhere. In several places in the world, it is even non-existent.
Preceded by an extensive introduction by Giuliano Amato, the volume by Louis Henkin reconstructs its history and declinations in the various national legislations from the 17th century to the present day.
