Collection’s Captions

A participatory writing project to create a narrative of the Museum Collection, conceived by children and young people for their peers.

MAXXI offers a programme of in-person and online meetings for primary and secondary schools, designed to help students read and interpret contemporary art.

Through in-depth studies of selected works and artists from the MAXXI Collection and participatory writing workshops, children and young people write captions for the Museum’s works.

A story composed by children and young people for their peers, based on the content and meanings of the works.

The project, launched in 2021, has involved, over the years, 15 classes from different schools, each called upon to work on a piece, extracting meanings to be conveyed in the caption produced by the students in accessible language.

The final work, one caption per class relating to the work studied and explored in depth with the educators, brings together everyone’s contributions.

The captions are collected in a printed publication, distributed within the Museum, and digitally:
