Milano calibro 9 (1972) is the crime masterpiece of a small but great master of the genre: based on Scerbanenco’s noir novel, it is a film of disillusioned violence and fierce revenge, rediscovered by Tarantino.

Ugo Piazza is released from prison and returns to racketeering, only to find himself trapped again. Gastone Moschin, the surprising protagonist, is pursued by Bacalov’s music as if by a murderous puppet. The stylised brutality of the action is reflected in a dark metropolitan landscape that captures the sense of menace in the news reports of the time.

The 4K restoration by CSC-Cineteca Nazionale in collaboration with Minerva Pictures and Rarovideo was carried out using the original negative materials and recovering the superimpositions present in a positive copy, preserved in the CSC-Cineteca Nazionale archive, but absent in many of the distributed copies. Thanks to this version, the film can be seen in its original form, as intended by the director.

Film Genres: Then and Now is a programme curated by Fabio Melelli that brings together timeless classics and more recent films, showing how genre cinema continually renews itself through distinctive authorial visions.
