On the occasion of Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Film at MAXXI season is presenting a “necessary” film, the debut work by the director László Nemes.
a film by László Nemes
Hunghery 2015, 107’
starring Reza Röhrig, Urs Rechn
In a concentration camp, in the worst inferno of the century, amidst new arrivals, gas chambers and the stripping and removal of corpses – a terrible, systematic killing machine accompanied by screams, moans and beatings –Saul, a sonderkommando, convinces himself that among the dead is his son whom he is determined to bury according to the Jewish rites. If you think you have seen everything about the camps, this film, the winner of an Oscar and the Grand Prix at Cannes, led by a Buster Keaton-like figure moving through the holocaust with crazed indifference, will persuade you otherwise.

Pierluigi Battista journalist, writer and television presenter
