The Film-Labyrinths of Pierre Coulibeuf

Tuesday 16 – Wednesday 17 April 2013
MAXXI Auditorium – admittance free while places available

Pierre Coulibeuf, a plastic artist and cineaste, is a rather atypical figure on the international scene. His films – short, medium and feature length, filmed in 16 and 35 mm – are in fact almost all created on the basis of the imaginations of other artists (from Michel Butor to Marina Abramovic, from Jean-Luc Moulène to Michelangelo Pistoletto, from Meg Stuart to Jan Fabre by way of Maurice Blanchot), single works such as the sculpture-architecture of Bustamante in Lost Paradise or set in unusual spaces (a building by Rudy Riciotti in Pavillon Noir, the architecture of Alvaro Siza for the Fondazione Iberê Camargo in Dédale).

One of the features of Coulibeuf’s filmmaking is, however, his great capacity for measuring himself against the various fields of artistic expression, constructing an independent and individual work. His works stimulate an articulated reflection on the potential and means offered by moving images in translating one aesthetic idiom into another and, therefore, in re-interpreting the works of others through a highly personal staging based on compositional-geometric rigour and temporal dilation.
