The virtual reality film on the experience of war comes to MAXXI
Giant is born out the personal experience of the director and co-author Milica Zec, raised in a Serbia wracked by the civil war of the 1990s. The experience of war dramatically continues to blight our contemporary world in which belligerent scenarios are multiplying throughout the globe. For the spectator living in Europe or the United States, however, these scenarios are still remote and come briefly to life in TV or web news slots, never actually affecting their daily life.
This project intends to open a window on what it might mean for an ordinary American family actually to find themselves at the epicentre of a conflict. Thanks to virtual reality, the public finds itself catapulted for an instant into a war zone, together with Clara, Josh and little Rose. In the intentions of the filmmakers, this might contribute to reducing the distances between and developing empathy towards people who are experiencing upheaval wholly independent of their own choices or control and who within this chaos are seeking ways of protecting themselves and those they love.
Giant is a project realised by Milica Zec and Winslow Turner Porter III, an American technological creative and producer, and has been developed within the ambit of NEW INC., the New Museum of New York’s art, technology and design incubation programme.
