This volume documents Mother, Robert Wilson’s work created shortly before the artist’s death and reinstalled at MAXXI in Gallery 5 of the museum. Stage images, critical and biographical texts recount the American artist’s work, his dialogue with Michelangelo’s Pietà Rondanini and his comparison with the Stabat Mater by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. What emerges is an interesting reinterpretation of Michelangelo’s masterpiece, a complex investigation that lies between performance, installation and musical composition. The work Mother is brought to life in the pages of the publication through stage photographs, unpublished drawings and texts by art historians, critics and curators who reconstruct Robert Wilson’s universe and his connection with the world of contemporary art and music.
