The idea and the perspective

A project on the analytical power of photography.

Created in collaboration with Mario Cresci, on the occasion of the exhibition at MAXXI An Exorcism of Time, and with the students of class IV H of the IIS ‘Donato Bramante’ in Rome (Art School, Architecture and Environment course, academic year 2023/2024), The idea and the perspective was a 2023 project that started from the awareness that our view of reality is influenced by our identity, just as our ideas are shaped by the landscape in which we are immersed.

An initial phase dedicated to studying the creative process, developed by Mario Cresci over years of anthropological research and photographic investigations, was followed by a workshop phase. The students were guided in reading the space around them and invited to reflect on the true meaning of photographic images. These are, in fact, “signs that convey choices and judgements about reality, becoming themselves a new and totally different reality”.

In Cresci’s poetics, the photographic image is a bearer of a wealth of information that emerges in full communicative force when properly analysed and subsequently reworked. The students created manipulated photographic projects to highlight the most significant content, then assembled them into a continuum of images to achieve a higher level of graphic abstraction. A large-scale choral narrative set up in the school spaces, bearing witness to this experience.
