From concrete to greenery: Piazza Alighiero Boetti is set to embark on a new chapter in its history.

The MAXXI piazza, a meeting point between the Museum and Rome’s Flaminio district, is the focus of a major environmental regeneration project. The construction site, which is temporarily closed to the public, is taking shape as a new square that embraces nature: in place of concrete surfaces, trees, shrubs, and hundreds of plants are transforming the area into a more shaded, liveable, and permeable environment.

The project marks a fundamental step in the transformation of the museum and its public space. The project is part of the Grande MAXXI masterplan, the museum’s expansion and regeneration plan designed by the international multidisciplinary team led by LAN. The mastermind behind the green initiatives is Bas Smets, one of the most important landscape architects on the contemporary scene, known for an approach to landscape that integrates aesthetics, climate and sustainability.
