The symbolic universe of one of the greatest contemporary artists as recounted by one of Italy’s most famous and renowned psychoanalysts.

With Il seme santo Massimo Recalcati continues his exploration of the realm of art, approaching the work of Anselm Kiefer in search of the mystery that allows the wound of trauma to be transformed into poetry, ruins into a new beginning. The traces that survive destruction and catastrophe can never be completely erased: the rubble of history demands to be redeemed in the future so that death does not have the last word.

Returning to Kiefer’s childhood experience of wandering through a landscape devastated by the Second World War, Recalcati shows how the work of memory never falls into nostalgic resentment: it leans forward, shedding new light on everything that has already been but still continues to begin. The rubble reveals itself to Anselm Kiefer, an artist also present in the MAXXI Collections with the work Sternenfall (1998), as a material that has withstood a catastrophe and not as something simply to be disposed of.
