A film about the desire for an impossible relationship, about the imbalance between the interpretation of reality and reality itself, about the inner conflict with one’s natural instincts.

In a suburb suspended between the metropolis and wild nature, where the only law seems to be that of the strongest, Marcello is a small, mild-mannered man who divides his days between working in his modest dog grooming salon, loving his daughter Sofia, and an ambiguous relationship of subordination to Simoncino, a former boxer who terrorises the entire neighbourhood. After yet another act of oppression, determined to reaffirm his dignity, Marcello devises a revenge plan with an unexpected outcome.

Dogman (2018) could be considered the final chapter of an ideal trilogy that also includes L’imbalsamatore (2002) and Primo amore (2004).

Film Genres: Then and Now is a programme curated by Fabio Melelli that brings together timeless classics and more recent films, showing how genre cinema continually renews itself through distinctive authorial visions.
