Could we hypothesise a real decline in art? This is one of the main questions that guides Guercio’s essay, which responds by re-examining the figures of the amateur, the professional and the master, analysing their historical evolution in modern artistic practice.

Retracing the trajectories of nineteenth- and twentieth-century art that led to this decline, the author suggests models for attempting to repair the damage. The text spans from Romanticism to the present day, covering a wide range of artists, critics and art historians.

There are insights into the works of several contemporary artists such as Jeff Koons, Maurizio Cattelan, Charles Ray, Sophie Calle, Francis Alys, and Anselm Kiefer, contrasting cases that suggest a process of dependence and decline with cases that seem to indicate persistent forms of autonomy.
