Clemente, Francesco

Francesco Clemente played a leading role in the Transavanguardia movement starting at the end of the 70s, and together with the other artists of the movement[M2] , he went back to traditional techniques that became his own stylistic symbol. Through an intense experimentation of different materials such as oil, watercolours, frescoes and mosaic, he composes figurative subjects, representing arcane images and deformed self-portraits. His works are imbued by references of ancient philosophy, symbolism, mythology and religion.
