The body as a controversial space and a field to explore

The artist Wangechi Mutu, one of the protagonists of the recent exhibition Road to justice, talks about the latest developments of her work on the occasion of the series of events promoted by the American Academy in Rome dedicated to the topic of the body in the arts field and within the society, from ancient times up to the present.

Mutu conceives the body as a controversial place and a field to explore in order to rethink the relationship between the power of men and the natural world. By making use of different media such as painting, collage, sculpture, performance and video, Mutu investigates subjects such as one’s own representation, the notion of genre, cultural traumas and environmental instabilities. Her visual language is enriched by the experimental use of non-orthodox materials, such as tea and volcanic dirt from Kenya, gems and seeds.
