“No walk, no work”. The British artist Hamish Fulton summarized his work with these words years ago. His work originates in his walks and in a concrete and individual experience of nature. Since the beginning of the 1970s, Fulton has ‘walked’ thousands of kilometers on five continents. The objects, photographs and texts generated by these experiences have been exhibited in major museums throughout the world, in spite of their apparent simplicity. They are always directly linked to a specific trip. The exhibited work – Twenty eight sticks for twenty eight one day walks from and to Kyoto travelling by way of Mount Hiei walking round the hill on a circuit of ancient paths (Japan 1998) – refers to twenty-eight walks completed between 1991 and 1998 around Mount Hiei, Japan. The artist followed a route which Buddhist monks run to test their endurance and self-control in their quest for illumination.
