Los Angeles, the Hollywood studios and the history of special effects. The art of Pat O’Neill has transformed the United States film industry.

The artistic career of Pat O’Neill, considered to be one of the pioneers and icons of American experimental film from the early Sixties, consists of wide ranging research in the visual arts including sculpture, collage, drawing and photography. His work is noted not only for its unique and avant-garde technical mastery but also for its great visual and visionary elegance. Uninterrupted images in which echo accounts of past and present, myths and legends of quotidian culture with particular reference to the landscapes of Los Angeles with its suburban and rural zones, make of O’Neill’s works a seductive filmic art.
O’Neill’s collaboration with the studios, like that of many other Californian artists, was instrumental in the transformation of the film industry. Looking at the work of Pat O’Neill today means examining an artist who with his work has helped lay the foundations for the experimentation with special effects that continues to influence our imaginaries, even now that they are created with digital technologies.

Tuesday 26 November, on the occasion of the Pat O’Neill Focus MAXXI is celebrating the work of one of the pioneers of experimental film with a seminar exploring his long and multi-faceted career.
