Experiencing the Shoah, war, the liberation of Italy, and the transition back to normality together with those who made the history of Italy
Bice Foà Chiaromonte was born in Naples in 1930, and spent her childhood under the yoke of racial laws. She married Gerardo Chiaromonte, leader of the PCI (the Italian communist party), in 1956. She moved to Rome in 1965, where she lived until her recent death. She taught in several schools, and created the Centro di Iniziativa Democratica degli Insegnanti (Teacher Centre for Democratic Initiatives) at the beginning of the ‘70s.
In her book, she recounts the second half of the 20th century by telling the story of her family, which is closely linked to the Sereni, Tagliacozzo, and Pontecorvo families, and that of her own life.
“When I attended university, we used to play a game between lessons: whoever belonged to the most social groups was entitled to speak ill about them. I always won.”
