Four lessons on the great artists who have redesigned and revolutionised art in the last sixty years.

Alberto Giacometti was one of the main artists of the 900s. His body of work involves many different topics, and the modes of expression he chose are almost exclusively visual (drawing, painting, sculpture). However, he believed he could not paint an apple the way he saw it. He believed his art was but a failed attempt at portraying reality. Space was like an all-devouring cancer growth to him. Such idea of space included rooms, or even the space surrounding sculptures, especially large, outdoor ones. Did Giacometti really fail to be an artist, or is failure the very essence of art?

Marco Belpoliti, essayist and writer. He teaches Italian literature and visual arts at Bergamo University. He contributes to L’Espresso and La Repubblica, and he has written several books, which were translated into a number of foreign languages.
