Waldheim, Charles

Charles Waldheim is the principal of Urban Agency, a multidisciplinary consultancy firm for contemporary design and urbanism.
The Director of the Department of Landscape Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, he is also a professor of Landscape Architecture with the same university. His research focuses on the relationship between the contemporary landscape and urbanism. Waldheim coined the term “landscape urbanism” to describe the recent role of the landscape as a means of restoring urban order to the contemporary city. He has taught and held lectures on contemporary urbanism in North America, Europe, Australia and Asia.
His texts have been published in the magazines Landscape Journal, Topos, Log, Praxis, 306090, Canadian Architect, and Landscape Architecture Magazine. He is the author of Constructed Ground (2001); Stalking Detroit (2001); CASE: Lafayette Park Detroit (2004); Architecture and Urbanism: Histories, Revisions, Alternatives (2005) and The Landscape Urbanism Reader (2006). He is currently completing Chicago O’Hare: A Natural and Cultural History, the history of the airport in this American metropolis.
