A project in collaboration with the Leonarda Vaccari Institute of Rome – Centre for the rehabilitation, education and inclusion of people with disabilities.
Tessere lo spazio delle relazioni is the third stage of an adjustment path aimed at bringing people closer to contemporary art by carrying out a cultural accessibility project launched in early 2017 thanks to the collaboration between Fondazione MAXXI and the Leonarda Vaccari Institute of Rome – Centre for the rehabilitation, education and inclusion of people with disabilities. Indeed, the activities have been coordinated by a multidisciplinary team made up of art historians, museum educators, social operators, psychologists and neuropsychiatrists.
In 2018, the participants in the project – who had already taken part in tours and workshops on the Nature Forever exhibition by Piero Ghilardi – expanded their knowledge of contemporary art by visiting the permanent collection of MAXXI, which was analysed and interpreted by means of the cards making part of the artwork I luoghi dell’arte a portata di mano by Maria Lai. During the follow-up day, the participants shared their personal interpretation of the works by helping the visitors to the Museum discover the works of artists Sol LeWitt, Mario Merz, Thomas Schütte, Gianfranco Baruchello, Alighiero Boetti and Anselm Kiefer.
In 2019, the exhibition Maria Lai. Tenendo per mano il sole will see the residents of the Leonarda Vaccari Institute deal with a deeper level of understanding of contemporary art and architecture. Once again, the participants will use Lai’s playing cards in order to read and interpret the built space around them, from the places hosting their daily activities to the complex museum building. In December, the participants will use the cards to “play” with the visitors to the museum, thereby sharing their unusual takes on the extraordinary building designed by Zaha Hadid.
