A versatile artist, filmmaker and theatrical director, William Kentridge returns to MAXXI to meet the museum’s public. Interviewed by Carlos Basualdo, MAXXI Arte’s Curator at Large, the South African artist will be discussing a number of his works, his poetic and his vision of art.

Today celebrated by leading international museums and institutions, Kentridge trained at the Johannesburg Art Foundation; the subjects of his works relate to the South Africa of apartheid and post-apartheid, with particular interest in the loss of historical memory and what this entails.

Six works by the artist are present in the MAXXI collection: the tapestry North Pole Map (2003), the theatre set/installation Preparing the flute (2004 – 2005), the drawing Flagellant (1996 – 1997), the charcoal work Cemetery with cypresses (Drawing from The Return of Ulysses, 1998), Untitled (Large drawing – Standing man, 2001), and the video Zeno Writing (2002).
